The 2011 Subang Scrabble Challenge was held with great success in the Majlis Perbandaran
Subang Jaya(MPSJ) by K.Sundraraj. This year’s tournament managed to attract double the
amount of contestants from the previous year, with 90 participants, ranging from old to
young. The beginners category attracted the most, 38 participants playing Scrabble and
having fun as they learn the game. After 5 games, Irfan Sabri Mohd Sabri managed to win all
his games and was the champion of his category. 1st runners-up went to Chin Cheng Chai
who had a humungous spread of +1011 to edge of Phoon Foong Ha by means of spread.
It was a pleasure to see so many new players in the Scrabble realm, showing that the game
has not withered in Malaysia.
In the intermediate category, 28 players pitted their wits against each other, with notable
players like Vinnith Ramamurti and Choo Zi Wei in the fray. Vinnith dropped an early game
to Zi Wei to remain in second place until the King of The Hill rounds where he beat Zi Wei
three times to gain an unassailable lead in the standings. It was too late to stop Vinnith and he
went on to be crowned the Subang Intermediate champion for the second year running with
14 wins and a monstrous spread of +2625. Second place went to Choo Zi Wei with 11 wins
and Jeihiin Subramaniam achieved third placing with 10 wins.
The main event was of course the Open category where one gets to witness Scrabble masters
of all ages duke it out for the 1st prize of RM400. The tournament also welcomed Shim Yen
Nee from Singapore and also the Richards family; Paul Richards, Karen Richards and
Alastair Richards, hailing from Australia, which added some spice to the tournament. Pui
Cheng Wui, Khoo Beng Way, Tan Jin Chor and William Kang were trading places for pole
position during the first day. At the end of the 8th game, William Kang was in the lead with 7
wins, only dropping his first game to Sean Chung.
On the second day, the lead once again exchanged hands between Khoo Beng Way and Pui
Cheng Wui. At the start of the King of The Hill rounds, Beng Way had to face Pui Cheng
Wui three times. Pui Cheng Wui showed great skill to win two of the games to maintain pole
position at the end of Game 14. In the final game, Pui Cheng Wui faced Chang Ching Wei,
who was on a 5 game winning streak after losing the first match of the day to Tan Jin Chor.
Both on 10 wins, it was a decisive game to determine the champion of this year’s Subang
Scrabble Challenge. Alas, the tiles were in Ching Wei’s favour as he won the game 506-387.
A post-mortem of the game showed that both players missed nine-timers of their own; Ching
Wei missing BAYADEER and BAYADERE [a dancing girl] and Pui Cheng Wui missing
REFASTEN.
With Ching Wei winning the final game, he was first in the standings with 11 wins and +585
spread. Khoo Beng Way edged off Pui Cheng Wui to take second place due to his superior
spread of +720. Martin Teo’s nine-timer, UNGLOVED was the high word in the category
with 172 points. Other good plays in the category include MARAVEDI[a former coin of
Spain], NEOBLAST [a cell important in regeneration of worms] and DESYATIN [a Russian
measurement of land].
